FUNKY FOREST: THE FIRST CONTACT is a dreamlike, psychedelic comedy that collects a series of outrageous non-sequiturs involving Guitar Brother and his friends. Featuring everything from animated kaiju dance breaks to a classroom that transforms into a musical instrument, the movie destroyed festival audiences when it debuted in 2005 and eventually became an early Internet-age WTF classic. FUNKY FOREST gathers some of the leading figures of Japan’s millennial new wave of surreal pop cinema—including Tadanobu Asano (ICHI THE KILLER), Rinko Kikuchi (PACIFIC RIM), and Hideaki Anno (creator of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION)—and then sets them loose to confuse, amuse, and freak you out.
