DREW MCDOWALL (NYC) ( Member of COIL)(Dais Records) – Drew McDowall’s works are sacraments to alterity. An artist who has refused to conform in music and in life, McDowall mines the hallucinatory spaces that exist between reality and celestial otherness. His meditative compositions are haunting and spiritual, melding intricate modular soundscapes with cut-up samples, and deconstructing sounds into their most basic shuddering structures and shapes. The disorienting ambient mirages that result elicit terror, tender melancholy, and heavenly flickers of expansive beauty.
His backstory reads like a primer of psychedelic fiction woven into statements of the unbelievable, superhuman, and outright insane. Growing up in the gangs of 1970’s Scotland, McDowall-fatigued by years of daily violence and the chaotic madness of that life- sought aggressive self-expression in punk and found a home in Glasgows rich underground music community. After a stint with The Poems, a band he started with his then-wife Rose McDowall, he joined the ranks of UK avant-gardists Genesis P-Orridge, David Tibet, Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson, John Balance, and countless others who would come to define the industrial music’s blossoming experimental vanguard. McDowall eventually collaborated with Psychic TV and became a full-time member of the cult outfit Coil, where his influence shaped the group’s later output: exercises in magical practice and music-as-psychoactive effect.
While McDowall has adhered to electronics throughout his career, he has escaped making music confined to any one genre. This is partially because of his diverse collaborations; since moving to Brooklyn 20 years ago, he has worked with esteemed acts like Hiro Kone, Puce Mary, Croatian Amor, Varg, Uniform, Rabit and Shapednoise, and toured a live AV reinterpretation of Coil’s seminal drone work, Time Machines, at festivals across the world.
His performances and showcases led to his first studio album on Dais Records in 2015, Collapse, which was quickly followed by Unnatural Channel and The Third Helix. September 2020 will see his fourth release on the label, Agalma- his most expansive and imaginative work yet. Its seven tracks include contributions from Caterina Barbieri, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Kali Malone, Maralie Armstrong-Rial, Elvin Brandhi and MSYLMA. Together, they create a keeling sound synonymous with McDowall’s traditional production method, but integrate aria, pipe organ, and choral mass to strike a fresh-and nearly devotional-chord.
YE GODS (CT) ( L.I.E.S. RECORDS / BUNKER RECORDS) – Ye Gods is described as an ‘Occult Devotional Electronics’ Project. It is characterized sonically through the use of drum machines as bassline generators, mantra, vocal drones and monosynth explorations. Instructions for this were received in 2018 via dream in Den Haag, Netherlands. British composer and current only member Antoni Maiovvi then delivered the first recordings to Guy Tavares of Bunker Records, who then disseminated the work via the distribution channels of Clone, Rotterdam. The artifact then made its way to Aphex Twin (who broadcast a selection in his Printworks, London performance) and Ron Morelli of L.I.E.S. Records who then encouraged further explorations, resulting in the album ‘Dumah’ in 2020. Further works have appeared on Italian label Deviant Pleasures, Scottish label Clan Destine and Avon Terror Corps in Maiovvi’s hometown of Bristol, England. So far, everyone who has come into contact with the work has encouraged Maiovvi to keep being a weirdo.
ENTRO (NYC) (BANK RECORDS / L.I.E.S. RECORDS) – Producer and DJ from New York, By way of CT. Owner of BANK RECORDS NYC. Entro produces heavy hitting dark dance music, masterfully Blending the likes of techno, house, acid, electro and industrial into popping hard hitting bangers. Creating some of the best underground Grime filled electro industrial tracks to hit the floor in the last few years. Pounding rhythms and trance inducing grooves. Perfectly crafted tracks.
PEDESTRIAN DEPOSIT (L.A.) (MONORAIL TRESPASSING) – Reverse tension composition; existing somewhere between electroacoustic music, sound collage, and pure harsh noise, with elements of nearly every style of experimental music in-between. The collaborative work of Jonathan Borges and Shannon Kennedy of Pedestrian Deposit could be described as highly composed, often abstract sound textures combined to create dynamic experimental music that draws on the duo’s widely contrasting auditory obsessions. Borges’ use of crude yet disciplined electronics, tape loops, field recordings, and controlled feedback manipulation contrasts against Shannon’s use of self-designed stringed instruments, bowing techniques and amplified wood and metal, resulting in music that is both raw and refined. Pedestrian Deposit bears elements of electro-acoustic sound, musique concrete, classical, industrial and harsh noise, but cannot be confined to any one genre.
Jonathan Borges began Pedestrian Deposit in the Winter of 2000, with the concept of combining layers of electronic sound with no pre-determined relation to one another until mixed. The project slowly evolved to incorporate elements and hybrids of harsh noise, tape collage, field recordings and ambient music with a focus on extreme contrast, resulting in a prolific few years of rich and dynamic compositions on such labels as Hospital Productions, Hanson Records, and Borges’ own Monorail Trespassing label, to name a few.
After a two-year hiatus, PD returned in the fall of 2008 with the addition of multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Shannon Kennedy; and her elements of cello, violin and amplified, bowed and manipulated objects. They have consistently toured the United States nearly every year since, placing an emphasis on the development and evolution of physical, psychological and organic live performance.
